Region mops up after thunderstorms

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are continuing to make summer 2012 a washout Photo: Brian Bales

Our washout summer has been treated to spectacular lightning storms that hit parts of the Anglia region on Wednesday night.

The heavy rain caused flooding in areas of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Firefighters have been pumping out people's gardens.

The deluge also wiped out King's Lynn Stars Elite League speedway clash with Eastbourne.

Through the summer months of June, July and August the Anglia region can usually expect 151 millimeters or 6 inches of rain. We're only just over halfway through this summer and we've already had 171 millimeters.

This summer is in good company - every summer since 2003 has been wetter than normal. But we're a long way off the wettest ever which was in 1912 with more than 500 mm of rain.
