Around 40,000 people from around the world have descended on Hadleigh Farm in Essex to watch the county host this weekend's mountain biking event. It was a sell-out.
Yesterday British cyclist Annie Last, who's 23, finished in 8th place. She was the first female mountain biker to represent Great Britain since 2000.
The 4.7km course is set in 550 acres at Hadleigh Farm. It was specially-built for the Olympics using 500 tonnes of rock and 3,500 tonnes of crushed stone. It’s estimated that the mountain biking event has boosted Essex’s economy by £140 million.
Essex County Council plan to adapt the course to make it accessible for the public. A visitor centre will be built on the site and the surrounding trials and paths will be improved to make it an attractive tourist destination for years to come.
