A train driver with Greater Anglia has just retired after fifty years of riding the rails. John Hockley started work as a fireman on steam locomotives just three days after his 15th birthday in 1962.

Ten years later he trained as a driver and has worked on steam, diesel and electric trains.

John says he's looking forward to retirement and will probably end up volunteering on one of our region's restored steam railways. As he says "working on the railways is not a job, it's a way of life"
