Newmarket Sausages protected
A ruling has been made meaning only sausages made by companies based in and around Newmarket, Suffolk can call themselves Newmarket Sausages.
The brand has been officially protected by the European Commission.
Newmarket sausages now join the likes of Melton Mowbray pies and Champagne in having the status.
There are strict criteria that sausage-makers must follow, in addition to the geographical contraints.
The sausages must also have a minimum meat content of 70%, which includes a fat content of typically less than 20%.
The ruling also gives something away about the flavourings used in Newmarket Sausages: Nutmeg, Thyme, Parsley, and dried lemon are all listed ingredients. Watch Kate Prout's report.
