A good working dog is worth its weight in gold - at least that's what a shepherd from Suffolk is hoping. Edward Thornalley has just bought the most expensive sheepdog in the world at auction. He paid eight thousand pounds for 18-month-old Midge at an auction in Yorkshire.
He said: "I knew she was going to make a lot of money because she's extraordinarily good. At auction you don't really know how much things are going to make but I knew it was going to be a lot of money, perhaps didn't realise it was going to be quite so much but I'm happy with the price. But she just puts a smile on my face every time I see her and you can't put a price on that, she is worth every penny"
The most expensive dog ever sold was a red "Tibetan mastiff" called Big Splash who was sold in China for nearly a million pounds last year. Generally the most expensive breed is the Japanese Akita which sells for up to £5000. A trained border collie, by contrast usually goes for around £2000. Watch Kate Prout's report.
