In a little over a week, voters will cast their ballots in a new election to select Police and Crime Commissioners, who'll work with Chief Constables to run our police forces.
We're looking at some of the contests in our region and here we focus on Essex.
It's the biggest county force in the East, with more than 3,400 officers. The crime rate is below the national average - with 60 crimes per 1,000 of the population, and to run the force it costs £166 for every person in Essex.
