A council leader and his wife have been found shot dead at Cromer in Norfolk.

Keith Johnson was leader of North Norfolk District Council and as a former mayor of Cromer was one of the best known figures in the town.

It's thought he shot his wife Andrea at their home in the Compit Hills area of the town yesterday afternoon before turning the gun on himself.

Tonight police have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

In Cromer today the mood was one of stunned disbelief. As police attempted to fathom what had gone so tragically wrong on this quiet residential estate.

Two miles away in the centre of Cromer, the town's flag flew at half mast in memory of well known local couple Keith and Andrea Johnson, found shot dead close to their bungalow..

Tonight detectives are still trying to piece together what it was that led to Mr Johnson - leader of North Norfolk Council - to kill his wife and then turn the gun on himself.

The couple were seen at a Christmas Market on Saturday, and were said to be in good spirits and appeared happy.

Keith Johnson was a prominent figure in the local community. He was Mayor of Cromer for several years and was the current leader of the district council.

He married his wife Andrea in 2004. She had been suffering from a serious back problem. Recently she'd worked in the town's Homebase store.

Tonight's Andrea Johnson' Porsche car remains on the grass outside the house. A firearm has been removed. It's emerged that Mrs Johnson held a firearms licence.
