Colchester United and Leyton Orient players are backing a local anti-knife campaign today by wearing ‘Only Cowards Carry’ t-shirts during their warm up.

Caroline Shearer set up the organisation after her 17-year-old son Jay Whiston was stabbed to death at a house party in Marlowe Way in Colchester on 8 September last year. She wants to raise awareness of the dangers of carrying weapons and hopes to get weapon awareness on the national curriculum in the same way that sex education is.

Essex police have taken more than 400 statements and examined 72 mobile phones. A murder weapon still has not been found. Seven people arrested in connection with Jay’s murder have had their bail extended to 22 May.
