A premature baby from Chelmsford who doctors said had a slim chance of survival has defied the odds and is about to celebrate her first birthday.
Demi Bloomfield was born three and a half months early and weighed just 1lb 6oz at her lightest – that is the same as half a bag of sugar.
She was rushed from Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford to Medway in Kent after being put into a plastic bag to protect her delicate skin.
After three and a half months in hospital she was able to return home but was still dependent on an oxygen mask to breathe. She has only been able to breathe on her own in the past three weeks.
Demi turns one on Monday – a milestone her parents, Anna Williams and Carl Blomfield, thought they’d never see.
