Stevenage have signed former Chelsea trainee Jimmy Smith.

The 26-year old arrives at The Lamex Stadium after a four-year spell at League One rivals Leyton Orient, during which he made 189 appearances and scored 22 goals.

Smith graduated from the Chelsea academy, and had a spell on loan with Norwich City in the Championship before moving to Brisbane Road in 2009.

He was a key member of the Orient midfield as the East London club reached the FA Cup fifth round in 2011 - including the winner at Norwich in Round 3 - and he also helped secure two top-seven positions in the past three seasons.

“I know a number of the lads already such as Ben Chorley from Orient and Filipe Morais and Anthony Grant from my Chelsea days and they only had good things to say about the club, so it was an easy decision to make," said Smith.

“The training ground is amazing, right up there with some Championship and even Premier League facilities and I can’t wait for the new season.”

Smith is the latest arrival since Graham Westley's return to the club for a third spell as manager.
