Coastal landmark reaches the end of its life

Lighthouse to close Photo: Picture by Trinity House / Steve Williams

A lighthouse which has guided sailors off the Suffolk coast for 400 years has been switched off for the final time.

The Orford Ness lighthouse is under threat from coastal erosion - so its owners Trinity House have decided to close it and let the tower fall into the sea

The light range from Southwold lighthouse has been boosted to allow Orfordness to be retired. A series of commemorative events will begin in the autumn.
