An Army bomb disposal expert from Essex whose courage prevented a disaster in Afghanistan, has been recognised for his bravery and awarded the George Medal.
Warrant Officer Andy Peat helped save a badly injured Danish soldier and led ten others to safety from a heavily mined area.
The 39-year-old said:
“When that happens, in my role, you become responsible for everyone there. There were 10 of us in a small area. And I needed to make sure we got to the soldier who was down as quickly as possible and to prevent any further injuries.”
The George Medal is awarded for acts of great bravery not in the face of the enemy. It was instituted in 1940 and is one of the second highest tier of military award.
