Tornado jets from RAF Marham have foiled an attempted to bomb a security convoy in Afghanistan.

They spotted insurgents attempting to plant a roadside bomb ahead of an convoy of American and Afghan forces.

The Tornado GR4 jets were fitted with the very latest surveillance equipment, which helped them identify the deadly explosive devices just a few hundred yards in front of the convoy.

The flew low and fired flares over the attackers to deter them.

The leader of the American forces on the ground was full of praise.

“When the Brits do shows of presence they almost scrape the ground. They fly so low you don’t know what it means. What I like is the quality of the pilots and the quality of the sensors. They report everything that they see.”

The whole operation was over in less than a minute.
