Conservative majority: 6

The Conservatives are battling to save a slim majority on Basildon Council against Labour. The party re-gained an overall majority in 2003 but are within three seats of losing it. However Labour are some way off winning a majority of their own.

The council tends to sway with the national political mood and swings between Labour and the Tories with long periods when no party is in overall control.

There are elections for 15 of the 42 seats on the council.
