Hospital bosses in Peterborough say they are likely to lose around a million pounds a year following a decision by the Ministry of Defence to close its medical unit there.

The unit has operated for the last 18 years, treating civilians as well as service personnel, but budget cuts mean its no longer affordable.

The loss of the MOD contract will mean service personnel are no longer treated at Peterborough but it also means civilians will no longer have the benefit of military medical expertise.

Until now treatment for all patients has been provided both by hospital staff and by their military counterparts.
