Police in Colchester have launched a second major murder inquiry after a woman was found fatally injured on a footpath in the town this morning. She was discovered by a member of the public with severe injuries to her head and body just before 10.40am.
The murder bears a strong similarity to that of James Attfield, who was found dying of stab wounds in Lower Castle Park in March. However police say they are not linking this crime to his killing at this stage, although they will be pursuing all lines of inquiry.
The victim was found on a footpath known as Salary Brook Trail near flats in Britten Close. Paramedics were called and tried to administer treatment but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet identified the victim, or specified the nature of her injuries.
A police cordon has been set up on the Salary Brook Trail. This has been closed off from Britten Close to Buffett Way. Officers from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate are investigating the death and forensic teams are combing the area behind the Greenstead Estate for evidence.
