Adnams' plans to expand and refurbish in Southwold has had a bitter response from some residents

Adnams has planning permission to refurbish the Swan pub and to create a visitor centre and shop in the Cygnet. It has submitted another application to extend the car-park and create two-way vehicle access from Victoria St instead of from the Market Square.

"If it weren't Adnams I feel this proposal just would not get off the ground. There is implicit danger. The traffic that would develop, a 50% increase in traffic according to Adnams own estimate, within Victoria Street"

– Geoffrey Palmer, Actor

But Adnams say they are improving the town by removing traffic from a narrow archway entrance to the pub and hotel

"We want to work with residents. We don't want any heat in this situation. It's easy for people to characterise it as 'them and us'. What we're about is growing our business in a sensitive way, creating jobs for young and old people. And I think that's important because if we don't get young people in the town it leads to a hollowed out place for retirees and that's no good for retirees or for the town"

– Andy Wood, Chief Exec, Adnams

The plans will be debated by Waveney District Council. If approved work will start in January 2017
