A grandfather from Wisbech in Cambridgeshire says you are never too old to hear again, after a cochlea implant which he says has changed his life.

Bryan Underwood had the operation after becoming profoundly deaf and is now able to hear sounds he hasn't heard for forty years.

"The surprise to me is how much I can pick up, even a teaspoon. Previously you tended to stand back from conversations."

"I just think it is a miracle, now I don't have to shout, I can even shout from upstairs and he hears me so that's good."

After treatment for pneumonia when he was a child, Bryan became deaf in one ear and started losing his hearing in the other. At 78 he had a cochlear implant which he says has changed his life.

His surgery was performed by an Addenbrooke's Hospital surgeon, but Bryan had his implant switched on Live on TV for the Channel 4 programme 'Breaking the Silence'.

"Once we send someone off for a referral we don't always see the outcome of what's happened so it's really good."
