£7m clean-up bill for rubbish dumped in the Anglia region

There has been a big increase in fly-tipping across the Anglia region and it is costing council taxpayers millions of pounds.

Figures released by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) show there were nearly 90,000 incidents where rubbish was dumped illegally in the Anglia region in 2015/16.

The clear-up bill and the legal costs of prosecuting the culprits cost councils in this region £6.8 million.

The number of fly-tipping incidents varies widely from place to place.

Essex has seen a 38% increase in the past four years with 17,600 incidents in 2015/16. The county has, however, seen a decline since the previous year.

The borough of Northampton alone saw more than 12,000 rubbish dumping incidents last year landing the council will a bill for the clean-up and legal costs of nearly £640,000.

The biggest rise in fly-tipping in the Anglia region has been in the Castle Point area of South Essex around Canvey Island.

It has rising seven-fold since 2012/13 when there were 157 reportings to 1,033 in the latest set of figures.
