Thousands of children are taking part in a music festival this weekend in Colchester to celebrate the county's musical heritage.

The Sounds of Essex Youth Music Festival showcases musical talent as well as giving children the opportunity to try new instruments.

The event also marks 60 years of Essex Youth Orchestras.

Organisers hope to inspire and engage young people, whatever their music choice.

"It started as a celebration of 60 years of Essex youth orchestras but it turned into something a lot bigger celebrating music-making across the county in a range of genres and formats.

"It's about celebrating all the excellent stuff that's happening and also saying to the community 'there's all these opportunities on your doorstep and please engage with it, inspire children to engage with musical education'."
