Uncapped Essex batsman Tom Westley will make his England Test debut against South Africa next week, the ECB have announced.

The 28-year-old will replace the injured Gary Ballance at number three for the third Test at the Oval.

Westley has been in good form for the current County Championship leaders so far this season, scoring 478 runs at an average of 53.11.

He recently hit 106 not out against South Africa for the England Lions at Worcester last month.

This is why you get into cricket, because you want to play for England.

I owe a lot to so many people, but my dad has been the most influential person in my career.

He was the first person I spoke to after the news came through. He’s a builder, and he’s not known for being very emotional. But he told me he was very proud, and said he might have to nip around the back of the scaffolding to shed a tear – in a monotone way, obviously.

England have also picked another newcomer in the shape of Middlesex's Dawid Malan, although his place in the side is dependant on whether the selectors decide to include an extra batsman.

The four-match series is currently tied at 1-1 after South Africa hammered England by 340 runs in the second Test at Trent Bridge.
