Tom Westley: New England batsman admits dad 'shed a tear' following his call-up

Essex batsman Tom Westley said it was an emotional moment for his parents after he was named in England's team to play in next week's Third Test against South Africa.

The 28-year-old will make his debut at number three at The Oval next Thursday.

Westley said he was at home in London when he got the call from National selector James Whitaker, and admits to tears being shed - particularly by his father who's a builder.

He's not the most emotional of men but he did say he was going to pop round the side of the building site and maybe shed a tear, in a monotone sort of voice.

I couldn't actually get hold of my mum. I tried about 30 times but she was at work. So she actually found out unfortunately through the media. But I think there were a few tears.

They were very happy so it was a nice day. The call came through round about 10:30 in the morning.

I had James's number saved to my phone so I was a little bit apprehensive whether it was going to be good news or disappointing news, but obviously it was good news.

The four-match series is currently tied at 1-1 following South Africa's comprehensive 340-run victory in the second Test at Trent Bridge.
