Outdoor nursery in Norfolk crowned best in the country

Imagine a nursery where the tiny tots use hammers and drills, make their own toys and even do their own risk assessments!

Well, at The Dandelion Nursery in Norfolk all of that happens - as well as tree climbing, tyre-rolling and mud-pie making.

The nursery is based in Marsham and is celebrating a very special award, after just being crowned the Nursery of the Year.

It felt like a validation of everything we believe in.

We are a really small nursery compared to others who were up for the award, in a very small village, but our ideas are deep and big.

We feel that that has been recognised, that this is the way children can be taught and it works.

It was founded by former primary school teachers Emma Harwood and Hayley Room, who wanted to create an environment which was unique and stimulated learning.

It caters for children aged two to eight and is one of a growing number of nurseries where children learn through playing outside.

The youngsters here love playing together and getting stuck in the mud.

Dandelion was rated outstanding in all four categories - leadership, quality of teaching, personal development and outcomes for children.

Children are free to play, explore, imagine and learn- and they love it!

Everyone is going wild for Dandelion.

Hayley and Emma will open a second outdoor nursery in Norwich in the Spring and hope their vision of outdoor learning continues to grow.
