Despite competition from big DIY superstores and internet shopping, Goldings is still going strong.

With 35,000 different products in stock, it has earned a reputation for variety.

Vic Warner first started working at the store when he was 15.

In those days, work wasn't easy to get. It was really hard in the early sixties and, if you got a job, you took it, because there wasn't another one going and, well, I enjoyed it and I carried on and I like meeting people and that sort of thing and just carried on from there.

Customers have been shopping at Goldings since 1867 and keep returning because of the customer service.

It was the first commercial premises in Bedford to have gas central heating and originally had its own forge for metalwork.

The business will soon be taken over by Chris Temple, who is keen to keep up its reputation.
