A driver who killed two men when his lorry ploughed into their van on the A14 near Swavesey last year has been jailed for 16 months.

Stephen Widdowson, 51, was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday October 13th. He had pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of Jason Louis, 31, from Stilton and Daniel Marshall, 37, from Hartford by careless driving.

Mr Widdowson was driving at speed on April 20 2016 when his car transporter which was fully loaded, crashed into the white transit van. Both the driver of the van, Mr Louis, and the passenger, Mr Marshall, died at the scene.

Mr Widdowson was given 16 months for each count of causing death by dangerous driving. He was also disqualified from driving for two years and eight months.

“This collision was completely avoidable had Widdowson paid proper attention to the road ahead. His actions on the day of the collision and the length of time it has taken for him to admit his responsibilities have caused great distress to the families of those who died and everyone involved.”
