There's been stinging criticism of plans to increase parking charges in Cambridge City centre to tackle congestion at peak hours.

Cambridge City council wants to raise its charges between 8 and 10 in the morning to tackle congestion at peak hours and put up the price of some season tickets by almost a third.

Some city centre car parks already charge up to £26 a day to park. However the council leader insists its not a money-making exercise.

The aim is to cut the number of cars coming in thereby reducing congestion and improve air quality. We do have a serious congestion problem every morning in Cambridge.

– Lewis Herbert, Leader, Cambridge City Council

"We understand the local authorities are under extreme pressure with their budgets but motorists should not be used as a cash cow to try and plug deficits... Drivers already contribute around 40 billion pounds a year in taxation. Actually when you look at what they are getting in return it's a pretty poor return on their investment."
