Thousands of school children will have a second day off today with heavy snow at the weekend continuing to result in school closures.

Up to 10cm (4 inches) of snow fell in many parts during Sunday and the Met Office issued an ice warning overnight as temperatures plunged.

By Sunday evening, 166 schools in Bedfordshire had already confirmed they would be closed on Monday along with a further 123 schools in Northamptonshire. In Milton Keynes 86 school had closed and there were 24 closures in Essex.

Some will remained closed today - and others opening later - after fears that snow and ice could make the commute too dangerous.

In Hertfordshire, parents have to contact schools directly to find out if they have closed because of the adverse weather conditions or they can sign up to get direct text or email alerts.
