26 year old Lewis Onwuchekwa was one of two men who broke into the victim's home in Thames Haven Road in Corringham in July 2017 and pulled her from her bed.

They stole her jewellery including her wedding ring and demanded her bank card and PIN number. A three figure sum of crash was later stolen from her account.

Two days later police attempted to stop a Peugeot 2008 on the A127 in West Horndon but it drove off, mounting a pavement as it fled. It crashed a short while afterwards and police chased the two occuapants- one of them was Lewis Onwuchekwa.

An officer used CS spray in an attempt to arrest him but Onwuchekwa then took the CS spray and attempted to spray the officer before punching him in the head and running off. He was arrested a short time later by a second officer.

Onwuchekwa, of Newton Road, Tilbury was convicted of robbery, assaulting a police constable with intent to resist arrest, dangerous driving and was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years. He was also banned from driving for six-and-a-half years.

"This was particularly harrowing incident that involved an attack on an elderly vulnerable victim and the calculated and callous actions of Onwuchekwa towards the victim, which will have undoubtedly left her and her family with lifelong mental and emotional scars."
