Northamptonshire County Council has banned any new expenditure as it faces investigation into financial problems.

The Director of Finance imposed immediate spending controls meaning the council will not be able to authorise any new spending with the exception of statutory services for safeguarding vulnerable people.

"The notice has been served in light of the severe financial challenge facing the authority and the significant risk that it will not be in a position to deliver a balanced budget by the end of the year.

"The notice does not affect staff pay and the council will continue to meet its statutory functions."

Allegations of financial failings at Northamptonshire County Council are currently being investigated by the government.

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid made the announcement in response to concerns about financial management and governance at the authority.

Council leaders welcomed the review and say the authority has always been "open and transparent".

Three Labour parliamentary candidates in the county have called on the government to send commissioners to take over the running of the council.

“The failure of this Tory-run council shows that their approach to managing our public services doesn’t work.

“There have been deeply worrying reports for a number of months that this council was failing in its duty to the people of Northamptonshire – and now these people will pay the price for this negligence.

– Andrew Gwynne MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government
The spending ban does not affect staff pay or services the council has to provide by law.
