Tom Westley: Essex star confident of defending County Championship title

Essex vice-captain Tom Westley has set his sights on defending the County Championship title when the new season gets underway next month.

Essex were crowned champions for the first time since 1992 last season, and went the entire campaign unbeaten.

Essex were honoured with a special presentation of the County Championship trophy by the Lord's Taverners at the Home of Cricket on Monday, and Westley is hopeful that it will prove to be another successful year under new Head Coach Anthony McGrath.

"We weren't given much chance last season, we were favourites to get relegated," he told ITV News Anglia.

"I think we showed how good we are as a side. I don't think we're going to look too far ahead in terms of this season, we're just going to take it game by game. But we can 100% defend it."

Westley and the rest of his teammates will now head out to Barbados on Sunday for the traditional season curtain raiser against the MCC.

The start of their County Championship defence is against Yorkshire on April 13.
