Warning after drivers stranded on flooded Fenland road

Police are warning drivers to avoid flooded roads around the Norfolk/ Cambridgeshire border after some had to be rescued.

The notorious A1101 Welney Wash Road flooded over the bank holiday and was closed on Tuesday.

Despite warnings and signs, vehicles have ended up stranded in the water.

"Due to heavy rainfall and flooding, the road was closed on Tuesday 3 April. Signs are in place warning drivers not to cross, including high tech flashing signs which are triggered when the water level rises.

"These signs let people know how deep the water is and we hope the public will take notice of these signs which are there for their safety."

The Welney Wash is a flood plain that is often left impassable, with the village cut off and drivers facing a 30-mile detour.
