A learner driver who confused the brake and accelerator pedals and hit a young boy in Saffron Walden, Essex has been jailed for 16 months.

Eleanor Cass, from Hertford, was being supervised when she stopped at a T-junction at Gabriel Street on March 15 last year.

When the car ahead moved on she started to pull away. As she did the six-year-old began to cross the road.

As he did she pressed the accelerator instead of the bake hitting the victim and then a house.

The victim was left with life-changing head injuries.

The 26-year-old admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving Chelmsford Crown Court on April 18 and was jailed yesterday (Wednesday 23).

"All drivers, regardless of skill and experience have the same level of responsibility to control their vehicles to a required standard to keep other road users and people in within our communities safe.

“The actions of Eleanor Cass resulted in a young life being dramatically changed forever and the sentence issued today reflects that fact."
