Luton airport is celebrating its 80th birthday today. The Bedfordshire runway opened in 1938 and in World War Two served as a base for RAF fighters.

It is currently undergoing a big redevelopment as part of a plan to increase passenger numbers to 18 million a year by 2020.

I'm proud of what LLA has become over the past 80 years. Today it is one of Europe's fastest growing airports.

We are a major part of the aviation sector and make an important contribution to the local and national economy - and we look forward to playing an increasingly important role for many years to come.

Over the years the airport has grown from a small municipal aerodrome to one of the UK's largest airports with more than 15.8 million passengers in 2017.

It is fitting that in our anniversary year passengers will really start to feel the benefits of our £150m transformation into a bigger and better LLA.

This has been the largest single investment in our history and it's all focused on making sure our passengers have a quick, easy and enjoyable experience with us.
