Ely is aiming to be the first city in the country to be a plastic shopping bag free zone.

The tourist board Visit Ely wants everyone to use home-made 'borrow bags' - a reusable alternative made from recycled material.

In terms of making it a city-wide scheme Ely has an advantage because it's one of the smallest in the country.- with a population of only 20,000

Modbury in Devon became plastic free back in 2007 but Ely would be the first city-wide scheme. It has an advantage because it's one of the smallest in the country with a population of around 20,000 people.

"The idea is if you go out shopping and you've forgotten a bag, you can borrow a bag from all our participating shops and then you either return that bag to that same shop or to another shop or keep it and loan it and borrow it around your friends and family but the whole point is the bag stays in circulation."
