David Cameron and Nick Clegg joined forces at a tractor factory in Basildon to declare their determination to carry on with the Coalition's plan despite heavy losses in the polls last week.
The Labour leader Ed Miliband was in Harlow celebrating his party's gains, although he warned that all politicians needed to do more to engage with voters.

Election 2012: Huntingdonshire
The Conservatives have lost 2 seats on Huntingdonshire District Council, but remain in total overall control with 39 seats.
Labour, Ukip and Independents all gained 1 seat. The Lib Dems lost 1 seat.
Election 2012: South Cambridgeshire
A rare gain for the Tories. The Conservatives gain 1 seat to keep them in control of South Cambridgeshire District Council.
The Independents gained 1 seat and the Lib Dems lost 2. Labour keep their 1 seat.
Election 2012: North Hertfordshire
The Conservatives remain in control of North Hertfordshire District Council, despite losing 1 seat. They have 33 overall.
Labour gained 3 seats, with 10 overall. And the Lib Dems lost 2 seats, leaving them with 6.
