Memorial service for Desert Rats

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of El-Alamein, and special services have been held to honour the bravery of those who fought there.

The battle in Egypt in 1942 was regarded as a major turning point in the eventual outcome of the Second World War, winning control of North Africa.

Among those who fought were the 7th Armoured Division, who were based at the Old Mundford Camp in Norfolk and were nicknamed the Desert Rats. This morning veterans from the Desert Rats were among those at a memorial service in Great Mundford to remember those who died.
