North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said he was "deeply shocked" by the death of council leader Keith Johnson

"I've known Keith for some years through his work on the council and we both attended the wedding of a mutual friend a few years ago," he said.

"We've always been on very good terms despite the fact I'm Lib Dem and he was a Conservative. I didn't know Andrea beyond seeing them both at civic events but she was always good for a friendly chat. I share the community's sense of disbelief and my heart goes out to their family and friends."

Tragic council leader had seemed "depressed"

A neighbour of a council leader and his wife who died of gunshot wounds at the weekend said the husband had seemed "really depressed" the day before their deaths.

Derek Houlston, whose garden backs on to the couple's property, said:

"He was always very friendly but we saw him doing his paper round - which she got him to do to keep fit - on Saturday and he seemed really depressed. I said hello but he just kept his head down and didn't respond. It's really sad because they seemed like such a lovely couple."

David Stow, who lives nearby, said "I knew them to speak to and they always seemed a very nice couple."

Two people found shot dead on a housing estate in North Norfolk are believed to be a local councillor and his wife.

Police were called to Compit Hills in Roughton, near Cromer, Norfolk, at 2.50pm yesterday after reports of gunshots.

They found the body of a woman, in her early 40s, in the front garden of a bungalow.

The pair have not been formally identified but are believed to be North Norfolk District Council leader Keith Johnson, 58, and his wife, Andrea.

Mr Johnson was also a former Mayor of Cromer and a long-serving member of both the district and town councils.
