Colchester Castle Museum has been stripped of its display cabinets and closed to regular visitors in preparation for a £4.2 million programme of redevelopment.
But before the builders move in, for one month only, the Museums Service is encouraging the public to experience the architecture of the empty castle building, with a series of special events.
One event is the Colchester Castle Beer Festival, where visitors can taste a selection of beers, ciders and wines.
From next Tuesday 19th March to Friday 22nd March 41 ales from 11 different Essex and Suffolk breweries, together with a choice selection of ciders, perries and locally produced wines, will be available over the four days of the festival.
Councillor Tim Young said: ‘This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy fine ale and good company in Colchester's landmark Norman Castle.
It’s a great way to support small and independent breweries while marvelling at the newly empty Castle building – I can’t urge you strongly enough to go but please remember to drink responsibly!"
