The Ministry of Justice has announced Blundeston Prison in Lowestoft is to close by the end of the year, as part of a major re-organisation.
Justice secretary Chris Grayling said the category-C jail was in a poor condition and was deteriorating rapidly. He plans to replace a number of older sites with two new "super prisons" in England and Wales.
A north Suffolk prison could be set to close as a result of government plans to reduce the overall prison budget it's been announced today.
Blundeston Prison, near Lowestoft, was one of four units targeted for closure in an announcement by the Secretary of State for Justice, Chris Grayling.
The Government say that the four closures could save them up to £30 million a year from the prison budget.
The date of the closure is yet to be announced.
