Hero awarded George Medal

A bomb disposal expert from Saffron Walden who used his body as a shield to stop an unstable explosive device from going off, has been given the George Medal for bravery.

Warrant Officer Andy Peat, who was serving in Afghanistan, then went on to help ten people get away safely from the heavily mined area they were stuck in.

Rachel Hughes, an army medic from Colchester, has been mentioned in despatches for performing life-saving first aid on three occasions during her first tour of duty in Afghanistan.
