The winning photograph Credit: Terry Higginson

An amateur photographer has won an award for his stunning image of a bridge demolition on the M1 in Bedfordshire.

Terry Higginson from Biggleswade won first prize in the Institution of Civil Engineers East of England annual photograph competition.

His photo showed the bridge demolition at Junction 12 on the M1 near Toddington, Bedfordshire

One of the judges Daniel Jones said the picture is "an outstanding image which looks like a scene from a sci-fi blockbuster. The lighting, exposure and composition are all perfect."

Woman handcuffed after surgery sit-in

A Bedfordshire grandmother was handcuffed by police for demanding to see her medical records. Mary Kerswell, who's 67, asked for a copy of her records after her GP surgery tried to treat her for a kidney condition she didn't have.

Eventually, Mrs Kerswell staged an impromptu sit-in, refusing to leave the surgery until she could see her full notes. Olivia Paterson reports.

4-year-old named

A four-year-old girl who died after being run over at her grandparents' home in Biggleswade has been named as Olivia Hick. She became trapped under a car on the driveway of their semi-detached house in Coppice Mead in the Bedfordshire town last Monday morning.

She suffered severe brain injuries, and died in hospital at the weekend. An inquest has been opened into her death.
