A man is in hospital with serious injuries after the car he was driving crashed through the wall of a Hertfordshire pub.
At just after 12.30pm yesterday staff at The Fox and Hounds in Barley near Royston heard an enormous bang. The car had gone through the front wall, narrowly missing a waitress and ending up in a children's play area. That part of the bar was empty at the time and only the driver was hurt.
It is thought that the car had come down a hill directly opposite the pub. For reasons not yet known it was unable to stop, and crashed through the wall. The pub's owner, Adrian Parkes, said it had been a real shock, and that his thoughts were with the driver and his family.
The police are investigating what happened. At the moment structural damage means the car cannot be removed. Construction engineers are assessing the damage, and beginning work to repair it. It is hoped that the pub can reopen by the weekend.
