A cyclist has been left with serious head injuries following a suspected hit and run in Essex.

The victim was struck by a white car, thought to be a Volkswagen Scirrocco, at Magdalen Laver, near Harlow, on Sunday.

The man, in his 50s, was taken to hospital.

Police have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, and assault. He has been released under investigation.

Officers want to speak to the driver of a black or dark-coloured car - possibly a Mini - which was immediately behind the white car at the time of the crash at 12.40pm.

Detective Inspector Mark Hopkinson, who is leading the investigation said:

This was an extremely serious incident and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time. We realise that emotions are running high in the local community.

“We have one individual in custody and we are progressing several lines of inquiry, We are working closely with the family, but it would be inappropriate to give further details on that at this stage.

“We would strongly urge people to refrain from making threats and accusations which could constitute offences in themselves, and much worse, if inaccurate, could undermine any investigation.

Northamptonshire Police needs to get on with the job of finding the right person who did this.
