Plans to electrify the Midland mainline rail route between Bedford and the East Midlands have been put on hold by the Government.
The Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin told MPs the planned upgrade is being paused to allow Network Rail to concentrate on other projects
The Conservatives had promised the electrification would be completed by 2020 and even had a pledge in their General Election manifesto.

A £38 billion five year plan to overhaul Britain's railways is being "reset" because it is "costing more and taking longer", Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has told MPs.
Electrification work will be "paused" on the Midland mainline.
Overhead line problems at Watford Junction have caused disruption on London Midland Services from Hertfordshire to London and Southern Trains between Milton Keynes and the Capital.
Disruption is expected to last until around 9am.
There are delays of up to 20 minutes on trains through Northampton due to a broken down train which has closed one of the platforms at the station.
A replacement bus service is running on the London Midland service between St Albans Abbey and Watford Junction due to broken down train.
There is no current estimate for when a normal service will resume.
Severe delays with replacement buses running on London Midland and Virgin services between Milton Keynes and Northampton, and on to Wellingborough for connections to London. It is being caused by overhead line problems.
Disruption on London Midland trains between Coventry and London Euston due to earlier over-running engineering works between Rugby and Northampton. Tickets being accepted on Virgin Trains services.
Replacement bus service running on London Midland trains between Bedford and Bletchley due to broken down train at Lidlington.
There is disruption on London Midland trains between Milton Keynes and Crewe while emergency services deal with an incident at Stoke-on-Trent. There is currently no estimate for when services will be back to normal.
