Detectives investigating the rape of a young woman in Maldon have released an efit image of one of the suspects.

A woman aged in her 20s from the local area was walking away from the Fullbridge Tesco store near the underpass at Mill Lane when she was grabbed by two men, dragged into bushes and raped.

The attacked happened between 5.45pm and 6.15pm on Saturday, January 24.

The first suspect who carried out the assault and subject of the efit image, was of Asian appearance, 25-30-years-old, 5ft 10in to 6 ft tall, with stubble on his face. He wore a Superdry jacket which had a green logo.

The second man was slightly taller than the first, and wore a black coat and hooded top with the hood up.

Two men who had been arrested in connection with the inquiry have been released without charge.

"It is really important that people have a close look at the efit image and let us know as soon as possible whether they recognise this man." "Equally, are you aware of anyone matching these descriptions who was acting strangely over the weekend and may have been in the Maldon area?

"I need anyone who has any information to contact my team as soon as possible so we can catch the men responsible and get justice for this woman.”

He is 5ft 9ins to 5ft 10ins tall with stubble on his face and was wearing a Superdry jacket with a green logo.

The second man was slightly taller than the first and wore a black coat and a hooded top with the hood up.

"Initial investigations have established the same men may have been seen acting suspiciously in the area earlier in the day.

I need to speak with anyone who may have seen or spoken to the men. I would also like to speak to anyone who was in the area between 5.30pm and 7pm who may have seen anything.

I have a team of detectives obtaining information about the suspects to enable us to arrest them as soon as possible.

Maldon is a safe town to live in and I appreciate how shocking an incident like this will be to the community.

I am working with the local policing commander to ensure patrols in the area are increased to both reassure residents but also to gather information about those responsible.”

Communities remain on flood watch

One flood warning remains in place this evening after a day of high winds and rain along the East coast.

While the worst of the weather appears to have left Norfolk and Suffolk, the Environment Agency is still urging communities close to the waterfront in Maldon and the Hythe to prepare for flooding.

Lesser "flood alerts" are also in place across all three counties.

Man rescued after becoming stuck in the mud off Essex coast

A man had to be rescued after becoming stuck in the mud off the Essex coast last night.

His 16-year-old daughter raised the alarm just before 9.20pm.

Her father had got into difficulty on the mud flats at St Lawrence Bay near Maldon. He was trying to retrieve his glasses which he had lost earlier in the day.

Coastguard rescue teams were deployed from South Woodham Ferrers, Southend and Clacton. A rescue helicopter was also called to the scene.

The man was plucked from the mud and taken to Colchester Hospital. He is believed to be safe and well.

This morning, the coastguard said: "We would like to remind members of the public that the mud flats around the Essex coast are very dangerous."
