Preserving a precious pear

Warden Pears were mentioned by Shakespeare Credit: Press Association

Staff and students at Shuttleworth College in Old Warden, Bedfordshire are working to save a local cooking pear for future generations.

The Warden Pear, which dates back to the 13th century, is mentioned in Shakespeare's play "The Winter's Tale".

There are only five trees left producing the Warden Pear and now the college has set about increasing its numbers by grafting cuttings from the mother trees at Shuttleworth.
