ITV Anglia's Laura Burns has been meeting traders in Ipswich who say they've devastated at the impact major gas works have had on their businesses.
National Grid has been working since April to replace 100 year-old gas mains. Several roads have been closed to allow the work to take place.
Some businesses say they've lost tens of thousands of pounds in trade and are now looking for compensation.
Lowestoft has been selected to take part in the next round of the Portas Pilot scheme. They'll get a grant of a £100,000 and specialist advice on how to rejuvinate the high street.
