Island clean-up

More than 20 people have been helping clean-up Wallasea Island in Essex.

The team included volunteers from Rochford District Council, staff from local McDonalds restaurants and members of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds

They collected a total of 24 bags of rubbish.

Rochford armed robbery: CCTV released

Essex police have released a CCTV image of two men wanted in connection with an armed robbery in Rochford.

It happened at the Mace Stores on Ashingdon Road on 12 June. A member of staff was injured as the men stole cash, alcohol and cigarettes. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police.

Essex: Wood chip fire in Rochford

A pile of wood chippings 15 metres high is on fire at Rochford in Essex.

Crews were called to Hall Road just before 8pm on Friday night and ten fire appliances were sent to the scene.

By 9pm it was decided that the fire would be allowed to burn out in a controlled manner, and by this morning three crews remained to monitor the situation.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Council issue algae warning

Rochford District Council is issuing a warning to all pet owners in the District who use Cherry Orchard Jubilee Country Park after the discovery of potentially toxic algal blooms in the lake.

Following the discovery of what appeared to be algae the Council put up precautionary notices around the lake warning visitors of the possible dangers of Blue Green Algae.

Visitors are being told to keep away from the water.

Council team in national awards

Members of the recycling team at Rochford District Council in Essex have been recognised in a National Award scheme.

They've made the shortlist of the Local Authority Team of the Year category.

Rochford has already been recognised in a government study as the top recycling authority in the country.
