Two of the region's athletes have been nominated for the title of European Athlete of the Year.

Milton Keynes long jump Olympic champion Greg Rutherford and Cambridgeshire high jumper Robbie Grabarz have been nominated for the award, chosen each year by the European Athletics Association.

The pair face stiff competition as they are up against double Olympic champion and current holder of the title Mo Farrah.

Two more of the region's athletes start their Olympic campaign today.

Laura Trott of Harlow, goes in the heats of the women's team pursuit, while Milton Keynes athlete Greg Rutherford bids to qualify for the final of the men's long jump.
