Britain's least busy station sees 13-fold increase in passenger numbers

A tiny railway station which nestles in the flat landscape of the Cambridgeshire Fens has seen passenger numbers soar by an incredible 1200%.

Shippea Hill station is a request stop between Ely and Lakenheath and in 2015/16 was the least-used station in the UK rail network with just 12 passengers.

That number has now leapt to 156 passengers in the latest data from the Office of Road and Rail following publicity about the low figures.

A railway station in Angus, Scotland is now the least used in Britain. Just 24 passengers travelled to or from Barry Links station in 2016/17.

London Waterloo maintained its title as the country's busiest station for the 14th consecutive year. with 99.4 million passengers across the forecourt in a year.

The quietest train station in the UK has been revealed and it's in Cambridgeshire.

Only one train stops at Shippea Hill near Ely during the week and even that has to be on request.

The Office for Road and Rail say in the last financial year just 22 exits and entries were requested on the platform there.

It'll be no surprise that the busiest station is London Waterloo.
